Browser games stopped being the cheap option
Ten years ago a browser game meant Flash, a stutter every four seconds, and a resolution built for a laptop screen. Flash then died, and everybody assumed the games died with it. They did not. Corruption of Champions launched in 2011 as a Flash game and still plays today in a modern browser through an emulator, with no plugin and nothing installed.
What actually happened is that the web caught up. WebGL put real graphics in the browser, and Twine turned interactive fiction into something that compiles straight to a web page. The result is a genre where the most complex games in the whole adult space, the ones tracking hundreds of variables across a decade of development, happen to be the ones you can open in a tab.

Not every "browser game" is one
